Icarus

Well, as much as I like the name “Puffin” I was just thinking about my favourite myth “The fall of Icarus”, which I have depicted on my right shoulder permanently since 18.

I hadn’t realized there was a different interpretation from the hellenistic period, one that the escape was actually made by boat and dad had invented the first sails for it.

Anyway, needless to say, I’m leaning heavily towards this name for her.

hmmmm… Icarus …….I love it.

Hatchboard teak retainer and winch removal

Ahhh Boxing Day. time to relax and work on the boat a little.

I managed to get the teak that retains the hatch boards off. To find the screwheads buried under fiberglass, working from the top screw down, I slid a piece of pop can metal down between the wood and fiberglass until I hit the screw then drilled there until I hit the screw (with a drillbit the size of the screw head) damn that sounds confusing.. I need pictures.

I also took the sole boards, the companionway stairs and some other wood off the boat, so I can do all the woodwork at once in my warm and dry shop.

The fun part of the day was pulling the halyard winch and one of the self tailing winches off and apart for some TLC. They come apart very easily. I will clean the parts with alcohol and kerosene and use a light (3in1) oil on the pawls and lewmar winch grease (white lithium) on the bearings and weight bearing surfaces.

Teak removal

Tarped her up in such a way that I can still have full access over the winter months.tarp tent

having a hell of a time trying to get the port hatchboard teak off.. it is screwed on from the inside but some of the screw heads are covered in fiberglass.teakremovalhatch.jpg

First cleanup

Well the weather finally broke (it’s been well below freezing and snowing since she arrived!) today was a mild 3 degrees so I took the opportunity to wash her down for the first time. Got to go over her with a fine tooth comb.. a few surprises, but nothing that i cant fix! First thing will be redoing all the wood. exterior teak and interior (where damaged)
